Did you know that Lake Taupo on New Zealand's North Island is actually a massive, active, supervolcano?!

It's one of 12 active volcanos in the North Island and doesn't have a traditional cone shaped volcano look to it because previous eruptions have been so massive and violent that it's essentially blown itself away - leaving only the caldera (collapsed volcano) that has become Lake Taupo.

Fortunately it's been 1800 years since it's last eruption. But it's still active, so one day it's likely to kick off again!

*disclaimer* I'm clearly not a geologist or a volcano expert. Just loving learning this stuff as we go. But GeoNet is a wealth of information if you want to find out more (or check that I'm giving you the correct information 🤣) https://www.geonet.org.nz/about/volcano/taupo
