TE PAKI DUNES + 90 MILE BEACH

☆ Sandboarding down the Te Paki sand dunes + driving along 90 mile beach ☆

We finally got a break in the rain, and the day dawned gorgeous, blue and sunny so we took the opportunity to fang it down the Te Paki sand dunes on boogie boards, and go offroading on 90 Mile Beach.

Those sand dunes are seriously huge, absolutely beautiful, and very cool. They far exceeded my expectations and were heaps of fun. Unfortunately our cheap as boogie board from The Warehouse didn't cut it, but there's a lady there who hires out ones more suited to sand for $15 a pop, so we got one for the adults and one for the big kid. And man, those dunes are HUGE! And steep. You can really get some speed up. Plus the views from the top are pretty sweet too. Just be prepared to get sand in places sand should not be!

From the Te Paki dunes, you can drive your 4x4 down the creek and on to 90 Mile Beach. I was getting some real Fraser Island flashbacks here with those dunes and the big wide white beach like a highway (No dingos though!) Actually the sand was so hard and smooth I doubt we even needed to engage 4wd. In fact it was quicker, smoother and straighter than the main road, which suited me as these winding, hilly NZ roads are not agreeing with my stomach.

As we pulled off the beach further south to return to the main road and our caravan a Mercedes Sedan was pulling on to the beach for a drive, thus scrapping any grand ideas we had about being hardcore 4wders. But hey, this was the first time we've really gone offroad since bringing the Paj over from Aus. The poor thing is missing it!
